VPL - Traject

Reimagining and redesigning VPL’s core healthcare logistics platform to replace legacy software with modern workflows built for complex shipping operations.

VPL initially engaged me to conduct a UX audit of their existing healthcare logistics software. The goal was to identify usability issues and provide both short-term improvements and longer-term recommendations to inform their product roadmap.

The audit surfaced foundational problems with clarity, flow, and overall usability, helping the team understand why the product felt slow and outdated. Based on that work, the engagement expanded into a full redesign of the platform, with a focus on reimagining core workflows and modernizing the experience to better support day-to-day logistics operations.

Scope

Role & Ownership

I was responsible for defining the future-state user journeys and overall product vision for VPL Traject. This included redesigning core workflows, establishing a new UI layer, and determining what information needed to be captured, when, and why throughout the experience.

I led prototyping and design execution, worked closely with engineering to validate feasibility, and guided stakeholder alignment and approval. My role centered on casting a clear vision for the product and translating it into a modern, usable system that could replace the legacy platform.

The Real Problem

The original software created significant cognitive overload. Users were asked to process too much information on each screen, with long, dense forms that made workflows feel overwhelming and hard to complete.

Visual noise compounded the issue. Aggressive form validation and error states appeared before users took action, creating friction and confusion rather than guidance. As the platform evolved and new backend requirements were introduced, the existing UX patterns could not scale, making it increasingly difficult for users to move through critical logistics workflows efficiently.

What Changed / Outcome

The redesigned experience significantly reduced friction across key workflows, making the application easier and faster to complete. By simplifying flows and reducing cognitive load, fewer users abandoned the process and overall usability improved.

The modernized UI and clearer interaction patterns also allowed the platform to support new backend requirements and revenue-generating add-ons, directly contributing to improved business KPIs. The success of the redesign led to a follow-on engagement to design VPL View, a separate product built on the momentum and trust established through VPL Traject.
