Generac
Redesigning Generac’s consumer energy app to modernize the experience and align the software with the premium quality of its hardware and brand.
Generac engaged DodgeUX to redesign a consumer-facing energy application that had fallen behind both user expectations and the company’s broader product ecosystem. While Generac’s hardware was trusted and widely adopted, the accompanying software experience no longer reflected the sophistication or clarity expected from a market leader.
The goal was to modernize the application visually and experientially, while improving how users understood energy flow, system status, and overall performance at a glance.

Scope
Role & Ownership
DodgeUX served as the lead design partner for the application redesign, owning the visual direction, UX structure, and illustration system. The work focused on translating complex energy concepts into a clear, intuitive interface that could be easily understood by homeowners.
Ownership included defining the overall look and feel, designing domain-specific illustrations, establishing iconography and color usage, and reshaping how critical data was presented across the app. The redesign was carried out in close collaboration with product stakeholders to ensure alignment with Generac’s broader product vision.
The Real Problem
While the application contained valuable data, users struggled to understand what the information meant or how to act on it. Visuals did not clearly communicate where energy was coming from, how it was being used, or how the system was behaving in real time.
The interface lacked hierarchy and clarity, making it difficult for users to quickly assess system health, energy production, storage, and grid interaction. For a product tied directly to reliability and peace of mind, this lack of clarity undermined user confidence.
What Changed / Outcome
The redesigned application introduced a clearer, more intuitive way to understand energy behavior within the home. Key metrics such as production, consumption, battery storage, and grid interaction were reorganized into a more legible, glanceable experience.
A refined visual language, supported by custom illustrations, iconography, and purposeful color usage, helped users quickly interpret system status without needing to parse dense data. The result was a more modern, confident application that better aligned Generac’s software experience with the quality and trust associated with its hardware products.
